Material City – create an artwork for the city

Material City is a weekend break with artist Bonita Alice.

Clarifying your own identity as maker is an important springboard for your work. Your task will be to weave a reflection of yourself into an artwork which might be catalysed by the city or even become part of it. You will choose a specific site, log your thoughts, take photographs and make sketches to describe the work you would create.

Bonita Alice has been an exhibiting artist and educator since the mid 1980’s, working mostly in three-dimensions. She has been preoccupied for many years with emotional connection to place. Her most recent works are drawings and paintings that involve strange landscapes and beings that inhabit them uncomfortably, often with a sense of something precarious and threatening. Her explorations focus now primarily on interior places … our emotional lives which are linked crucially to the external but are usually only half-acknowledged.
